Couple fuel issues

Post by Teletom »

So first off, greetings everyone. First post here.

I just purchased a beautiful black '78 fiat 1800, although it does have a couple issues.

1. There's a strong fuel smell inside the cab when I go to start her, as well as for a little bit after shes running.

2. (Main concern) The car acts as though its starved for fuel when it gets down to about half a tank. The last time this happened I stopped by a gas station to fill her up and she only took 5 gallons and ran great after.

The fuel pump was recently replaced so that is not suspect, I really dont have any idea s to what could be causing this. Also I'm assuming the fuel smell is from the car running too rich as the oil has a slight fuel smell as well. Its a brand new weber carb on the car that I'm suspecting was not tuned properly. Any advice is appreciated on turning or any solution to my ailment.

Thanks in advance!

Which Weber card do you have? Most are jetted a bit rich for a stock 1800. Also check all the fuel AND vapor hoses in the engine compartment and trunk for looseness, cracks, leaks. If they look old, just replace them all.

raw fuel smell from a leak is completely different than the smell of a rich mixture. I also wouldn't assume the pump is not an issue just because it's been replaced. A common issue that leads many to replace the pump is a leak on the hose on the inlet side of the pump

Ok I'll definitely be checking and replacing all the fuel hoses this weekend, I need to take the tank out anyways to remove the rear bumper.
Is there any good sources for turning my specific carb? I dont know the model at the moment however.
Also any advice on things i should check/replace while I have the tank out would be appreciated.

In regards to the issue with it running out of gas anyone have any ideas?
Is there any way I can check the pump as well?

yes i think you have a bad fuel line
it runs inside along the drivers side sill
pull the carpet back "by your left foot and see if you have a leek
the tar on the floor will be oil and messy
mine was back about a foot and ruined the carpet
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

Check the inside of your gas tank while it's out for rust and gunk that could be clogging the fuel pickup.

Hey everyone, finished removing the bumpers earlier today. In that process I got to the fuel tank, the tank is almost spotless, must have been replaced at some point recently. However while I was draining the fuel I had a clear tube hooked up to the fuel pump to just have it run and drain the fuel but streams of bubbles were coming out of the fuel pump with the fuel. I'm assuming this issnt normal? Also I could make the bubble come out any time I tapped the fuel pump.

So couple questions, Would this be causing my fuel starvation symptoms? Also I narrowed down the appearance of the symptoms to when I'm usually on the freeway at 3k rpms the longer it goes on though the lower rpms the problems shows up at.

Anyone have any ideas? If Its the fuel pump what is a quality replacement to get,

bubbles would indicate air

Does that have to do with the fuel pump or should I look for something else? Would it also cause the issue with it acting like it need gas at high rpms?

You said you were going to replace all of the fuel hoses. Did you do that? When they get old they can get porous and suck air when the car is running and cause fuel starvation issues as well as that raw gas smell.

Beside the hoses in the engine compartment and in the trunk there are fuel hoses underneath the car on the driver's side too. The rubber fuel hoses go from the tank in the trunk and route under the car, terminate to short hard line runs under the car, then terminate to fuel hose again while still under the car which then terminate to the hard lines that run up into the passenger compartment.

Good Luck!!
