I removed my exhaust manifold and discovered this:
[img][URL=http://s751.photobucket.com/user/ralphc ... w.jpg.html][IMG]
The cylinder head that receives the stud is distorted/worn and does not hold the stud securely. I plan on using J B Weld to "weld" the stud into the cylinder head. What do Y'all think about this proposed fix?

I'm no expert, but when I screwed up the stud hole on my head I took it to a machine shop and had them weld it over and tap a new hole. That has the disadvantage that they had my head for about a month.

Re: Exhaust Manifold - Stud Wobble
Thanks A J. Is that the image I was trying to post? Anyway, my cylinder head looks just like that photo. J B Weld's FAQ does not recommend using their product on a manifold but I think the temp on the cylinder head would probably not exceed 500 degrees Fahrenheit. It has been like that for some time without causing any significant problem. I do seem to have a very small oil leak from stud area. it is the last one (the one closest to the firewall). I've posted many photos to this forum. I'll have to review the procedure again. I use photobucket and their interface has changed a bit. Feeble excuse, eh?

Re: Exhaust Manifold - Stud Wobble
Would a heli-coil work and then install the stud with some thread sealant?

A helicoil is essentially a bushing with threads on the outside and inside surfaces allowing you to step down a hole to accept a smaller bolt. I believe it's made from a coil of wire, hence the name.
