I knew it was bad but not this bad. My upper actually separated right in front of me after I had worked the knuckle left and right a few times while disassembling the front end. I didn't have a jack under the lower arm because I "wasn't that far yet."
Thank goodness most of the tension in the spring was already released - I had just gotten done removing the shock from underneath not five minutes before which seems to take most of the tension off.

My lower control arm gave way right at the BJ while in the driveway. It looked very much like your picture. If the BJ freezes up then the surrounding steel in the CA gets quickly overstressed. The pressed steel CA's for our cars are not exactly robust either. If those BJ's stay greased up then everything stays happy.
