Gas Mileage

Post by Hvnfn »

hey guys,

I have a '79 carb'd spider. I have upgraded the intake manifold to the 1800 intake with a new DFEV carb. I am using the 2" Air Cleaner for the DFEV. I have a 4-2-1 exhaust with a new cat and muffler. Stock 2000 head and stock 132 block. Almost all new lines under the hood. New plugs, wires, just re-did the timing belt and timing, etc... now, I am very curious...

I am getting 18 MPG in the city... What are you all getting? Is this good for this little 4 cyl? I would have expected it to be much higher considering it is a pretty efficient little engine, no?

What else besides getting rid of weight would you look at to improve the MPG?
Rebuild the top end, or get an 1800 polished and ported and do away with the 2000 head?
Rebuild the lower end?

In this gas cost conscious new world, I am curious how to reduce my carbon footprint... LOLOLOL... sorry... just had to say it.

my carbon footprint is directly related to the pressure that foot applies to the pedal beneath it. as the engine revs increase, and the pleasing sounds from under the hood and behind the trunk increase.... so does my weight on the right most pedal at my disposal.

18 is the best you get?

yeash.

after replacing the 28/32 and the dual plane intake; after dropping the emissions equipment in the mail to a friend in california...i drove like a mad man to the lake, hopped a ferry and disembarked in Milwaulkee. Whereupon i drove like a fiend to chicago, then home to KOW KUNTRY. Several hundred miles.......... averaging 26 mpg.

i am gonna be real interested in what this new head will produce on our trip to Pennsylvania this year...while i am in the midst of a dozen other Fiats .. all 600 ± miles one way. (thanks Alvon for that alt 241 trick).

get outa the city and onto some long, curvy, KUNTRY roads and really enjoy life. stop and go traffic is no fun, no matter what you drive. that should reduce that foot print. Besides; did you buy the Spider for fuel economy, or for the fun of it?
