Detailing Engine

Post by RaneeHobbs »

OK Guys & Gals - I would really like one of you to make a You Tube on how to clean/detail a Fiat 124 eninge. I want to do this but because of all the wiring and other items, I am a little scared! This engine has been neglected for years and grease, oil and dirt is thick. Yes I know I am asking for a lot, but I am new at this. Thanks

Depends a bit on whether it is a carbed or Fuel Injected engine? The basic idea is to keep water and degreaser out of places it shouldn't go.

well for starters i bought a few gars of hand cleaner and rubbed everything i could, but not the alt or wire connectors
too much and wash it out. then get some wire loom "black plastic wire covers" to replace all the old ones and any more that's not covered
over the years i took off the brake booster and replaced the old plastic i had with new,so remove all you can and clean it and under it
and so on...

don't forget to wash out the radiator and paint behind the grill"flat black"
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

You can spray engine cleaner ("gunk degreaser", etc ) around the warm, not hot, block, etc and then let it set, scrub, and wash it off with the hose, but there important things to watch out for:

Don't get anything into the carb. Cover it completely with a strong plastic bag. This is really important.
Don't get the degreaser inside the alternator. It won't due the windings or the bearings in there any good.
Don't spray the degreaser where it isn't needed, like on the radiator core.
Try to stay away from the electrical connections as much as possible.
Try not to spray directly on the holes that allow wires to pass through into the cowl or passenger compartment.

Tinfoil makes a pretty good barrier for many spots.
Use low pressure from the garden hose.

Disconnect the battery before starting any of this!
Wear glasses.
