If you're using Google Maps on a smartphone as your GPS, and you're looking to stick to the back roads when traveling from point A to point B, just select the bicycle route icon.
I dunno, maybe this is obvious, but I thought I'd point it out in case any folks hadn't thought of it. It's very handy.
Edit: I know there's a highway avoidance option, but going the bicycle "route" is just easier. Also, I think it may be even more restrictive, eliminating not just interstates but any busy highways.

That is a good tip, I wouldn't have thought of that
From experience does it work well for avoiding highways on long trips, or mostly for shorter commutes? I'm not sure how a 1,000 mile bicycle route would look like
