Shell Rotella 15-40 DIESEL seems to be the most popular, has the right combination of additives to protect these engines.

Rotella 15/40 is closest type of oil to what the car was made to run on. If you do not have new gaskets and seals you might want to stay away from synthetic. It has a way of finding the week spots and leaking out even more on our older engines manufactured with less precise machining. 4 quarts on level ground should do it.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

Yes put in 4 quarts to start, run the engine for a little while and then top it up, checking the dipstick. I believe that 4-1/3 quarts is the spec, if you also change the oil filter at the same time. I have been running it a little higher, like 4-2/3 or even a little more, with no ill effects. (no leaks, no splash backs up the tube, no oil in the crankcase vent line) The engine seems to run smoother with the oil level a little higher. Might be my imagination though. This Winter's change went back to 4-1/3 and will see if I notice any difference.

Do you use it with or without a zinc additive?

The rotellas are good oils. Interestingly most of us in the new Abarth community use Rotella 5W-40 on the turbo engine.

I'll switch over to 15W-40 on the Spider!

One of the reasons we use the Rotella is it means you don't need an additive.

Im a big believer in synthetics. I was at a truck show one time where the Amsoil booth had a hot plate and a dry ice chest with both synthetic and normal motor oil. On the hot plate, the standard oil turned to soot. In the ice chest it turned to molasses. The amsoil stayed the same color and viscosity in both tests. I've heard you do the greatest wear to your motor in cold startups. Not that i worry about that in the Arizona blast furnace. I do worry about the excessive heat here. i like the idea of an oil that won't break down in the heat. I suspect with a low use car and lots of days between oil changes, the synthetic will not age as fast as conventional oil.

I have always and still do use Castrox GTX 20-50 in all my old Fiats. The amounts mentioned seem correct. When I used to run track days I would overfill by one quart to keep the motors from oil starvation in hard turns but not necessary for street driving.
