Jetting the DFEV

Post by 70spider »

I have been running a bit rich with the 32/36 DFEV and was trying to set it up to where it would run better, mainly better acceleration after 3K rpms. The carbs set up from the factory was: Idle: P=60, S=50 Mains: P=137, S=140 AirCorrection (AC): P=165, S=160. So with that bit of info I did some research and came across aircooled.net tech article, basically set up the secondaries a little richer and lean the primaries. This is what I came up with on the first try. Idle: P=47.5, S=60 Mains: P=130, S=150 AC: P=160, S=180. With the new set up the car idled great and the exhaust did not smell of fuel, as before, but the acceleration when the secondaries opened kinda bogged not bad just sluggish and my rpms did not rev as quick as before. I read in other forums that bogging when the secondaries open meant it was to lean, the way I went seems contradictory because the acceleration was better, not great, with the stock set up. I would like to get a wide-band O2 sensor but can't afford one. I think I will lean the secondaries back to the stock configuration and see what happens. Any thoughts would be great, tuning a carb feels like voodoo to me

Well for anyone who may want to know, I changed the secondary Idle jet back from a 60 to a 50 and put the Weber airfliter set-up back on and it is a lot better. I fiddled with the mixture screw, leaned it out another 1/4 turn, and he pulls hard in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd all the way to the redline however when in 4th it kinda stalls at 5500 rpms. No biggie since I rarely go over 65mph. When the other jets here I am going to lean the secondary Main back to 145 and see if that helps. Also of note, I am going to increase the gap in my plugs to 0.30 and go with 8mm wires due to the fact I replaced the points with a Petronix and the coil with a Petronix Blaster, this may help.

Well in all honesty its a "Frankenstein". It started life as a 1438 but the PO put a 1608 head on it and I added to the chaos and put a 1800 intake on it :D . My set up, for now, is: Idle: P=47.5 S=50, Mains: P=130 S=150, AC P=160 S=180. I ran the car for 200 miles like this, pulled the plugs and they were nice and grey not black as before. I did fiddle with the mixture screw and ended up riching it a 1/4 turn.
