Clicking Noise Front of the Engine (Fixed)

Post by Rambo »

Hi,

For the last few months I have been having this noise that is like a clicking/knocking/clanking coming from the front of the engine during certain RPM conditions. The link to a video is below and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Odd. Almost sounds like something loose or rattling, like a bracket or something? Inspect carefully. Do you have a mechanic's stethoscope? If not get one from HF for a couple of bucks and it will help isolate exactly where the sound is coming from.

Ok so i bought a mechanics stethoscope and placed it around and i heard the noise on a bracket next to the crankshaft pulley.

Not sure exactly what is happening. Possibly the pulley is hitting the bracket? The bracket does not appear to be loose. I will have examine more closely tomorrow. Does anyone know what might be going on?

if you have plastic cam gears one of the gears may have a loose center hub

I would check the water pump pulley to see if its loose, a more likely culprit.

Agree with Matt. Try the pulley on all axes, in/out, up/down, left/right. If any movement - replace pump.

I once had a water pump that was leaking. When I pulled it off, shaking it caused a pretty loud rattle. The place I bought it from said it was a high quality pump, made in Japan. I replaced it with one from Italy.

The clearance between the pump impeller and the No. 1 cylinder wall is very tight. When the internal seal shrinks and allows water to the shaft bearing it quickly wears out and can induce play in the shaft which results in the impeller knocking against the cylinder wall.

The GMB pumps are made in Japan, and reportedly the best.

The pulley appears to have no play at all when applied force. The only place i can here the rattle with the stethescope is that bracket, when placed on the pump there is no rattle what so ever.

just a note to ponder; the GMB pumps are NOT the best. Pumps with cast impellers are much more efficient than the cheap stamped impellers that GMB uses. GMB is usually the least expensive, but that's the only category they would be considered best in

Hang on - is that the timing mark pointer that the sound appears to be coming from?

If so, that's not really a "bracket" as far as it's not attached to something at both ends (!)

Is there a chance that it has simply got knocked or moved somehow a hair's width closer to the pulley and a slight undulation in the pulley is touching?

That is exactly what my theory has been all along. I just didnt know what to call that thing. I havent had the chance quite yet but i planned to take the gaurd off the bottom and get a better look, hopefully today.

If it has been hitting there should be a shiny witness mark on the crank pulley. Nothing shiny in the pictures. Rotate the crank to see if there is a mark somewhere else on the pulley.
