Transmission capacity
Transmission capacity
I am in the middle of changing out the transmission fluid on my 1976 manual 5 speed. I drained out about 3/4 of a quart. The manual says it should hold about 1 3/4. Am I missing an additional drain plug somewhere. I drained it from the plug in the middle of the pan( allen head ) and am going to fill it through the plug (17mm bolt) on the passenger side of the tranny . I don't seem to be leaking anywhere. Is it possible the previous owner just dident fill it enough. Thanks in advance

Re: Transmission capacity
There is another, small drain plug on the rear side of the transmission, that will drain a little out too. Apparently there is an internal baffle that catches some at the rear. I got maybe a cup or 2 out of there when I changed mine. Sorry I don't have a pic, but I bet someone else does.

Re: Transmission capacity
I just changed mine, and just drained the center plug. It took about 1 1/2 quarts.

Re: Transmission capacity
Do the rear plug too! The fluid that came out, even though a relatively small amount, looked nothing like transmission oil.

Re: Transmission capacity
I thought that with the transmission you simply filled it until it starts to overflow from the fill hole, so unless you're filling it from a higher point you can not over/under fill. That being said, only getting 3/4 quart out would be a concern for me.
Good thing you're addressing the problem now.
I've also read that if you drain the smaller baffle section in the back it's a good idea to top off the transmission fluid again after a short drive b/c you can't or won't be able to fill that back baffle area through the fill hole on the first attempt.

Perhaps it was low on fluid to begin with. Were you experiencing shifting problems?Welder wrote:I am in the middle of changing out the transmission fluid on my 1976 manual 5 speed.
