What is the difference between a 79 and 80 head? (Carb vs FI)

Post by argonaut »

I have a head from a 1979 2L motor. I understand this was the only year the 2L had a carburetor. I am wondering if the 80-85 2L FI heads are any better than this one, or that much better to justify trying to find and buy one.

Does anyone know what the differences are between a 79 and 80-85 head or combustion chambers?

Thanks!

Carb head has passages for EGR and air injection.

The difference ia huge. The 79 and 80 carberated had Egr ports on both the intake and exhaust. The most desirable heads for a 2l is the 1800 head and the 2l fi head. The 1800 will give you higher compression and more hp. Both the fi head and 1800 head are compatible with both fi and carberated intakes.

Thanks for the replies so far, folks!

I think I have a handle on the 1.8l head. I have one of those also.

I am going to go out to the garage and have a look at those ports. So far I have seen that my 2L head has two ports on top, between the intake and exhaust towers. I also notice the cross-flow tube connecting from the Exh side to the Int side.

Well, yes, but the difference is only visual, I don't think the ports or combustion chambers are any different.

The 1800 head raises the compression ratio of the 2 liter slightly, but it's only a small difference, so it's only worth doing if the head needs to come off anyways.

2000 carb heads have a different shape for the #1 chamber IIRC. But really the problems aren't so much the combustion chambers but the EGR ports and reed valve ports that all need to be blocked off. It just ends up being kind of an ugly head with the four bolts in the top and the home-made blocks for the EGR porting.

Alright, thanks guys.

I'm going to avoid using this 2L Carb head. I'll either use the 1.8L or find a 2L FI head.
