Yep, I have very passively waited for my son to get interested in cars. I haven't wanted to push too hard and have him reject me. But, happily, this weekend, he said he wanted to learn. As an introduction to metal work, my son and I made a door cart. Maybe not necessary, but a fun project to learn on and very handy for mounting doors.
A little cutting and grinding...
And then his first try with the welder...
And this is our product...
Ok, maybe not so passively, I finally told him we could build a ratrod 50cc trike cart, if he learned how to help!! Ha!!
Talk about crazy motivation!!
I've so waited for this day!

Very cool, Alan, congratulations! When my youngest asked me to please NOT reinstall the rear axle until he could help, I had the same "Finally!" internal reaction. We've since worked together on his Bimmer, his wife's Subie, and he's helped more with the Fiat.

I see the kid has some stuff to learn about proper welding attire. With a few burn holes in his clothes and sunburned arms, he will get the message fast.

nice job, but aren't the wheels on the bottom of the cart too small? there's no way they're going to handle 50+ mph speeds.
my 7 and a half year old "helped" me yesterday with a brake job on our honda pilot. he was very proud of himself (and I was too).
