Flywheel Install

Post by joelittel »

On page 10-28 of my FIAT Service Manual it says to "Rotate the crankshaft until crankpins for No. 1 and No. 4 cylinders are at T.D.C. (Crankpins should be at top.) Position flywheel on crankshaft with index mark facing 1 and 4 crankpins.

I don't recall there being index marks on my flywheel. Does anyone know where to look? I've been looking through the photos I took during disassembly but I don't see any index marks.

Not sure. I just lined mine up until the bolts fit and torqued it. I hope I didn't miss something here.

bolt holes aren't simetrical, so you can't screw it on in any other position then way it should be

I'm very happy to hear this.

I wasn't able to get out to the garage and look at the actual parts last night and was worried that I had missed an important detail.

Many thanks

Well, then I've got something to think about. My flywheel was lightened, and most likely balanced as well, by Jason Miller. My crank shaft, which is new to me, was balanced at Apex here in Illinois. I did not contract the work on the crankshaft, I bought it from someone here on the forum, so I do not yet have all the details pertaining to what was done to it. Apex is looking into this for me and will let me know exactly what they did.

Am I correct in thinking that since the two have been balanced separately I shouldn't have any issues?

I know which side was up on my flywheel before I took it off, because I marked it, the unknown is the angle of the crank shaft. But it sounds like it may not be an issue.

That is a relief to me. Mine is stock and I did mark it just in case when I pulled it. During re-assembly after grinding flywheel and replacing clutch kit, a friend mechanic helping me said it didn't matter which way it went. So, I didn't bother searching for my mark. I sure would hate to have to pull it all apart again. I haven't driven it yet. So, hopefully all is good.
