Spider 2000 fuel line rerouting

Post by kmoses »

While replacing the floors on my 1979 Spider, I decided to reroute the fuel line from in the cabin to under the floor.

Sorry about that, the site kept locking up when I was trying to submit my post. Now I know what "Not" to do when posting

Wow, nice! That looks great!

What are the lines made out of?
What are the bushings where the lines pass through the under body rails?

As far as the other two lines in the trans tunnel, I'm guessing the thinner one is a brake line as it looks like it connects to the master cylinder...what is the bigger one though? The line that goes around the steering box and the along the lower frame rail towards the front of the engine bay..

Thanks, it was a lot harder to bend the lines than I was expecting.

The new lines are EZ-Bend tubing 3/16 for brakes, 1/4" for fuel return and 5/16" for fuel supply.
The bushing through floor support rail are homemade bulkhead fittings. 3/4" OD steel that has been drilled and tapped in each end 1/4" NPT and through drilled 5/16". These are inserted through the support rail and mig welded.

The larger line is the vapor line from the charcoal canister to the gas tank.
The smaller line is the back brake line. I removed the rear brake compensator and all its lines /tubeing and ran the rear line directly to the brake hose attached to the diff. I then installed a Wilwood brake proporting valve to adjust the rear brake pressure. The Wilwood valve is mounted beside the master cylinder.

One more thing about the metal fuel lines. To help retain the flexible fuel hose, crimp a compression sleeve on the line. You can get brass compression fittings at any hardware store. Place the metal line in the fitting, tighten it up, remove the fitting and use a Dremel tool to cut off the fitting cap(I cut two slots in the side of the cap 180° apart and then use a screwdriver to break the cap). To get the hose on easily, lube the metal line with synthetic brake grease and the hose will slide right over the compression sleeve.

That is a great tip! I usually just flare the end a bit to keep the hose clamp from sliding off, but the compression collar is a neat idea.

I can't take credit for the compression sleeve trick, I saw it on a Hot Rod site a while back.
