The oil pressure gauge is erratic? Sometimes is dropping (turning red light on) when accelerating???!!

Re: Oil pressure gauge
If both the gauge drops and the red light comes on then we will assume the reading is correct.
If the red light comes on I would let the engine idle until oil pressure comes back. If the light does not go out in a few seconds you should turn the engine off.
Is there enough oil in the engine? If so there is a good chance that the oil pump pickup tube has broken off, so the oil pump can only suck oil when the oil pan is full. Under acceleration the oil sloshes toward the rear, away from the oil pump. This happened to me a few years ago. Usually the oil pump pickup breaks off when the oil pan gets hit, but in my case there was no evidence of the pan being hit.
