Engine Stand

Post by joelittel »

I have most of the pieces necessary to build up a performance 2.0 and I'd like to get an engine stand to aid in the process.

Can anyone recommend a make/model? I don't want to buy one and discover that the twin cam doesn't mount to it.

I've seen a couple that rotate with a crank, which seems like something I would like. Has anyone tried one of these?

To mount up right you will need to build an adptor to mount it on the side of the engine. If you are only doing this one engine any old engine stand will work it is not a heavy engine.

For small blocks and 4cyl engines at home the $59 HF 1,000 lb model should work. Your welding equipment and angle grinder should allow you to fab any specific adapters you may need. Some will leave the cars motor mount bracket in place on the engine for side mounting or use a spare to weld a tube on to make their own side mount adapter.

If you plan on bolting it up to the rear almost any stand sold will fit. The rotating part is usually adjustable. If you want to mount via one of the side engine bracket points you'll have to fab up some sort of adapter (see post on this forum titled "engine on stand sideways").

Its a pretty light engine (I can lift a bare block by myself and two guys can lift a rotating assembly) so a cheap stand works fine.

My local AutoZone had a stand rated for 750 lbs. and at a reasonable price, so I picked it up over the weekend.

Does anyone know what size bolts I will need to mount the rear of the engine to the engine stand?

I plan to look into fabricating a side mount adapter, but for now I'd love to at least get it on the stand.

If they are long enough you can just use the same bolts that held the engine to the transmission bell housing. If not (mine were not long enough for the stand mounting bracket I am using), take one of those to the hardware store and buy four of the same size but longer.

I'll have to take one of my bolts to the hardware store. I was hoping that someone knew the size off the top of their head, so I could swing by the hardware store on my way home.

IMHO...just get a piece of round steel/pipe that fits in stand, and a piece of flat steel either 4x7 or 4x11, depending whether you will just use the engine mount studs or the additional studs that are there inline and forward. Drill corresponding holes in plate and weld to pipe...remove engine mount and bolt on adapter, it really is pretty simple, especially if eventually you want side mount

any steel place should have round that will fit

be sure and drill the holes in flat first so your welds don't interfere
