81/82 VIN Question

Post by bradartigue »

Do you have a 1981 or 1982 Spider? I am trying to validate how FIAT stamped the bodies. Does your car have both a 17 digit standard VIN (e.g. ZFAAS00B0C5003121) and a FIAT sequence number or VIN ZFAA124CS0*888888) ?

I am trying to determine what the first and last cars made with the standard VIN were. I know the last car made with the old body sequence was 186979, and presume the first made in 1982 was 5000001. I know the last VIN issued in 1982 was 5003121 (presumably the 3,121 car made in 1982).

The FIAT service letter on the subject is useless.

I think that all of the standardized VIN cars, the ones made after 186979, were assembled entirely at Pininfarina. The VINs for these cars all seem to have a 5 in the assembly position (pininfarina) vs. an 8 (lingotto).

As with all things FIAT in the 80's the real answer is probably lost.

Yes - so this is a 1981, correct? Body 181391, or the 181,391 Spider built.

In 82 they switched numerics. I'm wondering if the 82 has both the ZFA124CS0*xxxxxxxx and the ZFAAS00B8 (or B5).....

This is exactly what I needed. Says to me "Fiat (ZFA) Spider (A) Convertible (S), Base (0), Manual Seatbelts (0), 2000cc (B), Check Digit (9), 1982 (C), Plant (5), Body #000674. If the last serialized Spider was 186979 and the first VIN identified Spider was 1 then you add the digits after the 5 to the last serialized number to get your sequence...e.g. your car is #674, which would be body 186979 + 674, or the 187653th Spider body built.

Sorry for the late response but had to register to post. Bought my 1982 Spider new. It was made in March 1982:
VIN ZFAAS00B9C5003123
Engine Bay ZFA124CS0 05003123
3123 seems to be beyond the number you listed.
Thanks

Hello at all,
from the german fiat spider registry I can tell u that the last numbered fiat spider 2000 is: ZFAAS00B1C5003925!
I found that by testing the calculated later VIN numbers at: http://www.autocheck.com.
Records found for this vehicle: 9.

One later car was found in Hamburg, Germany with ending number: 5004034! But not sure, because not proofed by a picture of the VIN plate behind the windscreen.

Manufacturing of the FIAT Spider 2000 must ended with holidays at the Pininfarina plant in Italy around 06/82.

The manufacturing at FIAT plant ended with VIN: ZFAAS00B9C8189261, which must be around 10/81.

Hope that helps.

It does and think you. This stuff is very interesting to me.

Does anyone know the last pininfarina VIN # ever produced? Wondering if it is 5010018.

Hi,
as last proofed Pininfarina Spider we found:
VIN: ZFRAS00B8F5511939.
"Last known VIN of a Fiat 124 Spider found via http://www.autocheck.com. Records found for this vehicle: 7"

Here at fiatspider.com VIN ..11940 was reported as:
"The last spider is 5511940 according to Pininfarina not what is on people's web sites."

The VINs on Autocheck.com are not all real VINs. They put a bunch of stuff on the search pages to attract hits to their website. I've found it to be very unreliable.

I'm a bit confused though, you're saying someone registered ZFRAS00B8F5511940 on your website?

Hi again,
here in the forum wrote Darsella1 in 2010:

The last spider is 5511940 according to Pininfarina not what is on people's web sites. I have VIN# as high as 5511936 & 5511935, both were for sale in Colorado several years ago. The last few are actually in the USA as Micheal Blumberg purchased them at 5-6 at a time and imported them here.

So, this is my source!
