Brake booster orientation

Post by zachmac »

I screwed up and didn't pay close enough attention before I removed the mounting plate from the brake booster. When I went to bolt it up to the new one I noticed that it is NOT symmetric. The bolt pattern for the bolts that go through the firewall can be oriented two ways and reversing them will slightly offset the centerline of the booster up or down in relation to the pedal assembly. I could guess and try and hopefully get it right the first time, but I was hoping someone might be able to answer which way it goes?

This is the back of the booster, top shown at top. The bolts here are symmetric.

Here is the bracket in one possible orientation. Note how the bolts on the mounting plate are NOT symmetric, if you rotate it 180 it causes the booster to be mounted lower in relation to the pedal.

Other orientation shown:

Notice how the mounting plate bolts are now offset from the bottom booster bolts versus the top set. This will cause the booster to be lower than the first case.

So, the $64 question is which is correct?

Never mind, I just realized what a dumba@@ I was being! It finally dawned on me to simply stick the booster through the firewall hole without the bracket and see which set of bracket holes lined up and which were offset from the booster mounting bolts. Duh! Turns out it is as shown in the bottom picture above, bottom set of bolts / holes offset.
