What is the proper routing for wiring harness?

Post by kmoses »

When going to the back of the car, what is the proper way to route the wiring harness? Should I go over the back seat support crossmember or through the hole that is in the crossmember? My car is a '79 and when looking at photos I have seen it done both ways!

My 79 goes over. So there's nothing between the wire bundle and the front bottom edge of the rear seat. Seems like a bad choice (like fuel lines running through the pass. compartment) but that's how it is. I doubt a PO changed it from stock.

I just finished replacing my floors and replaced/reinforced the metal under the rear seat brace/crossmember. I deleted the lowered rear floor on the drivers side and now both rear floors are level with the front floors. This also made it possible to reroute my fuel lines (I don't like fuel lines in the passenger cabin). The lines now will travel along the inside rocker and travel through bulkhead fittings that go through the floor brace, to the transmission tunnel just ahead of the clutch arm, turn upward and join the fuel tank vent line at the top of the transmission tunnel to continue on to the engine bay. I wonder what the reason is for not routing the wiring harness through the available hole?
