Water Pump replace??

Post by Italchic »

I had been hearing a metallic sound tied to engine rpms that would go away after a while upon starting...this time the sound went away abruptly but the little red light on the tach came on and the temp gauge pegged...I guessing the water pump?

Water pump probably threw your alternator belt.
Tho, the noise could have been the alternator also.

AR has the water pump and installation is pretty simple, on my 76 anyway.

But if you don't know the age of your timing belt you probably should do the whole magilla since you'll be pulling the radiator and draining the coolant anyway.

Depending on the year the old alternators are tough and can be rebuilt. I've got an old fashioned starter/generator/alternator rebuilding shop that does nice work. Maybe you can find one in your area.

Thanks Roy, upon further inspection and after getting some adequate lighting in an otherwise dark garage, I discovered the belt had in deed been thrown. After installing new one all is quiet...will see after having had a chance to rest overnight what the morning brings.
