Happy Ending

Post by Budduncan »

I have neglected dealing with a rather severe pulling to the left on application of brakes. Since I only drive my '71 a couple hundred miles a year and only in sunny Seattle weather, I was used to steering hard right upon braking. Last year I replaced the front calipers and pads, but the problem while improved did not "go away". I knew the front was loose and had never been rebuilt. My wife has owned the car since 72 and so I talked to AR and ordered up all new control arms, ball joints and shocks. I have a local shop that has become "Fiat Knowledgeable" and I gladly paid them to do the work. I saw the article about flying springs and have no interest in participating. Anyway, upon rebuild they found one of my new last year brake pads and separated from its backing, so a new one was installed. Replacing the rear shocks required dropping the rear end, but the upshot is the car handles like a dream with no more horrible noises when crossing a speed bump, and dead flat steering upon braking. I had read in an earlier blog about the front suspension issues with braking and I am now a believer. While the labor was not cheap, the upgrade was really worth it, and for those of you willing to take on the challenge, my congratulations. Our current Seattle weather is Fiat Friendly and top down.
Cheers,
Bud
