timing belt movement

just replaced the leaking exhaust cam box gasket and reinstalled my t belt. This is the first time i have ever started and run the engine w/o the cover on the belt, and much to my amazement it walks all over the the cam and crank gears. It is rithumatic with the crank sprocket, and does it at any rpm., I never comes up against the cam sprocket shields, but it is an extreme movement and makes me a little concerned. I have never seen it on any of my vw's or toyota's.
Is this totally unusual or am i just worrying too much

Check the idler bearing...... They do wander some.....

I had a problem with my plastic auxiliary sprocket doing a similar thing. I checked it off the car and under very close examination it had worn quite 'untrue'. I think (someone will no doubt correct me) you can replace them with steel ones now.

both my sprockets are plastic, might be time for a new pair of steel ones

The plastic sprockets should be replaced as they have a bad habit of coming apart with the center hub separating from the rest of the sprocket. If one of your plastic sprockets in the process of cracking making the sprocket rock on the center hub I suppose it could cause your belt to wander on the sprockets.

I would definitely replace the plastic gears with that new substitute for plastic, called "metal".
