Aluminum wheel center caps

Post by johnsje6 »

When I bought my '74 it had aluminum wheels that look kind of like wire wheels, pretty nice except the center caps are rusty. I want to get some caps and put these on my '79 after it gets painted, anyone know where to get some 2 3/4" (70mm) center caps? Do you need any measurement other than the diameter?

I think hydrofloric acid is pretty dangerous if breathed in. Does anyone know how safe it is??

its not so harsh. it needs to sit on for 30 to 45 seconds
I used muratic acid on my ALU rims once back in 1998
just 5 seconds or so and they were brilliant

rinse with plenty of water.joe

Hydrofluoric acid is very nasty and dangerous stuff. Do not use it!

I serve as a consultant for a hazmat team. First off, HF is an OSHA "prior approval" chemical. This means my lab (with proper training and protective equipment) must get approval to even possess it. Our team uses fully encapsulated level A suits with SCBA to mitigate even small spills. Please don't underestimate the hazards associated with HF! Reagent grade conc. HF is ~60% and it will dissolve glass and of course skin, eyes and lung tissue as well. Perhaps Joe is using a diluted consumer version and diluting further in his shop to be relatively safe? In any case, clean wheels are not worth the risks (medical or legal) associated with conc. HF IMHO.
