fair price for 2nd gear syncro work

Post by micbrody »

Hi,
I purchased a 1981 Fiat 2000. My only big issue is that it grinds going into second gear. Nothing pops out of gear. I changed the transmission oil to MT90, which actually made problem worse. I am resigned to the fact that I need transmission pulled and , at least, second gear syncro/springs replaced; plus any other things that mechanic deems should be done. My question for the forum:
What is the fair price that I should be charged to do this work? My first estimate was $850 just to pull and inspect. Then added expense of parts needed.

At $850 before parts, I would consider a rebuilt transmission. If I do purchase a rebuilt transmission, what should the cost be of pulling old one and replacing with rebuilt transmission (assuming I already paid for transmission)?

You can do it yourself and buy parts from Autoricambi

I am new to transmission work. Not sure I want to tackle this by myself

I was also when I opened mine the first time. Since you think about buying a rebuilt one, what do you have to loose?

It makes most sense to have the transmission completely rebuilt once you've gone to the trouble of removing it. Inevitable if there's a clear sign that something is worn then there are other wear areas as well that will become obvious once it's pulled apart.
You will never regret doing it right the first time.
