1975 124 Spider Charcoal Canister To Carb Removal

Hello ever one can anyone tell me if the 1975 124 Spider Charcoal Canister can be removed and just plug the carb ends without any issues or is it needed, we don't need smog here in California on 1975 and later model cars.

If you look at the service manual, you'll see that there is a one-way valve located between the gas tank and the charcoal canister. This valve ensures built up pressure in the gas tank caused by fuel expansion and the resulting gas fumes has somewhere to go. It is released through the valve to the charcoal canister. My one-way valve failed resulting in the rubber fuel tank filler hose splitting.

It can be removed, but my personal opinion is to leave it in place. It will not affect your performance and serves a purpose.

Has anyone ever rebuilt one of the charcoal canisters? mine is 30 years old and im sure there iis nothing but muddy dust on the inside of it.

My recommendation is to carefully cut the top off along the original seam that goes around the perimeter. You can then remove the charcoal, remove the foam and replace. You can then fuse the plastic back together by melting it with a soldering iron. You can also cut an access hole in the side, but sealing it up is tougher to do. I once cut the bottom of one off...I'll never do that again though I did manage to save it.

Great thread. Not sure I'm going to reactivate the charcoal like the video (pet stores are much safer.).

What I'm wondering about is the connections between the canister and the air filter. The PO/mechanic had a disconnected rubber hose below the original air cleaner when I bought the car. No gas odor/smell, but that hose is too large for the 90 degree fitting on the free flow air filter I bought from A/R. Suggestions/thoughts appreciated, and pictures would be awesome!

The vacuum is intended to pull the residual fuel left in the charcoal canister into the intake so it can be burned.

OK Guys, my curiosity of the canister is cause I've just done a carb rebuild on a 32 ADFA and upon restart the Fiat 124 the car ran find for about 4 minutes, and then there was a little smoke and a smelled of gas then track down the source from were it came from and it was leaking from the bottom of the canister. Since then i unbolted the canister and replaced the gas line that connects to the bottom of the canister restarted it again but left it on it's side to see if more gas came out nothing on the second start up but there seems to be gas filling up in the carb on the opposite side of the choke side of the carb now.

The car idle's much better and cleaner than before i did the rebuild, it runs for about a minute then slowly die's out :?

Any idea of what may be causing the effect to happen?

Are you sure you re-connected the hoses to and from the carb in their correct positions?

Everything was labeled on each hose as to where each hose goes from when i first installed the carb. i used this photo here

I'm wondering if this could be one of the issues the fast idle diagram is pulled down and doesn't appear to work as it looks like there to much play in there. In the second photo it seems to be in the up position and also connecting to the acceleration pump arm which is #12 on the diagram page below

Sounds like you have a float level adjusted a bit too high or maybe it's sticking.
This can overfill the float chamber and flood your engine.
I recognize your handle from posting videos on RCUniverse from a few years ago.
If you're the same person, aren't you in the SF Bay area.
Might be able to take a drive over to help you out some time if that's the case.
