Floor insulation?

Post by Fifi1981 »

OK, I have started my interior project and I have come across insulation under the center console that is deteriorated quite badly. To replace it, do I use the same material I have seen used on "Overhaulin"? What's the name of that stuff anyways?

I got mine here:

As far as I can tell its a good price. It was easy to work with and seems to be doing it's job with temp and sound.

here are some pictures of my interior with it in there:

Dan, how many yards did it take (did you order)? I want to be sure to get enough but not spend a lot more than necessary. Thanks.

I knew you'd ask me that, so I went scouring through my two year old emails looking for the receipt or something, and I just can't find it. It comes in pretty wide rolls, so I was thinking I didn't have to order more than about 3 yards, but don't quote me on that. I'll double check tonight to see if I have a paper copy of the order.

I bought the 5 yards of the chepaer padding from from Autotrim, it's also thicker...

You really don't need the reflective stuff for lining the interior of the car except the right passenger side over the catalytic convertor, for this area I lined the bottom with heavy duty aluminum foil (the heavy weight stuff), then the padding, and finally a layer of aluminized mylar (get this at Home Depot or garden stores), then the carpet... it's very quiet now in the car and I reduced all heat from the convertor, plus you save a ton of money over the Dynamat stuff which is only good for the engine compartment.
If you get 5 yards of the padding it gives you extra padding to line the side panels and any exposed metal which would deaden any sounds or vibration... just use spray adhesive and stick the padding in place... works great.

Actually I did use something completely different - cheap, insulation perfect and easy to be installed - I did buy two 12mm isolation mats in black at a local outdoor store - works perfect for more than 15 years now.

Tappy,

I looked at using one of those carpet kits in my spider as well. However I realised that the sills on the coupe are much thinner than the spider, it should be ok since you'll be cutting the front piece in half to go around the transmission tunnel. It's good quality carpet !

I ended up ordering a seven piece carpet kit from Bruce's ( $265.00USD + Freight ), carpet is a bit on the thin side, only installed it this weekend.

Floor Insulation : I used a Nitrile (rubber) based underlaid which has a heat shield attached and is self adhesive, then I glued another carpet underlaid on top of that to stop the carpet pieces moving around.

Since the car it RHD the drivers seat was getting hot from the exhaust - it's better now !

My order arrived yesterday. Looks like a good product, and it appears very close in thickness to the original material. Thanks for the tip and link
