Hello,
Good morning.
This is Franklin looking to borrow or receive some donated used efi parts.
1981 Fiat spider 2000 efi
Air flow sensor unit
water temp sensor
cold start injector
thermo time switch
throttle position sensor
oxygen sensor
fuel pressure regulator
auxiliary air flow meter
double relay
The reason for this request is that I worked on the 1981 Fiat spider 2000 and swapped the ECU.
The ecu is good and and relays are good. One of the engine monitoring senders
is not completing the loop for activation of the fuel pump.
I get the voltage at the fuel pump during crank. (10) volts.
Even applied (12) volts direct to pump while disconnected from circuit.
Fuel pump turns on while disconnected from circuit.
Ground is not occuring while being connected to circuit.
I read that the air flow sensor turns the fuel pump on.
I will clean the air flow sensor for now.
Borrowing or receiving donated parts would be highly appreciated.
In exchange I can send some before and after pics of the 72' spider
I acquired to make run and look hot again.

Thank you for being supportive.

The fuel pump ground is a hard wire ground. It connects to the body in the trunk in the area of the tail light on the driver side. It is the power for the fuel pump that is switched on and off by the AFS controlling the double relay.

Hello,
Good morning. Thank you for the quick and detailed advice. I will check out the ground spot and clean it up.
If you would like to see my 72' fiat pics, how do you want to receive it?

I think it's always good to either post the photos here or a link to photobucket.com or where ever you store them so all can see them.
Re: Borrow or receive donated Used 1981 Fiat Spider parts
Hello,
Good evening.
Hope all is well.
I checked the ground at the trunk post today.
Cleaned it up. It was a bit rusty. Checked for continuity between the ground at the pump and the trunk post.
Ground is good. No change.
Somewhere between the engine components and the ecu i think is where it is happening.
I checked the resistance at the water temp sensor. open when cold.
Should have some form of resistance. Appears to be bad.
I think it should be closed when cold. need to verify.
I will look into photobucket.com for posting of my pics.
Thank you for chatting with me.

The temperature sensor in the coolant "T" should have the following resistance : 14 degrees F 7,000-11,000 ohms
68 degrees F 2,000-3,000 ohms
180 degrees F 270-400 ohms
I connect a 12V bulb onto the fuel pump terminals along with the fuel pump wires. That way I can watch the light as I move the AFS flap. The voltage at the pump has to be tested with the pump connected otherwise a bad connection will not be found.

Hello,
Good morning.
I had a set of leads connected to the fuel pump. I will set up a bulb across the leads and move AFS while the key is on the run position.
I will also change the coolant water temp sensor since i did receive no resistance at the sensor itself.
Thank you
Franklin

Hello,
Good evening.
Did some digging into the 1981 fiat recently.
swapped out the ECU for a good one.
swapped out the dual relay.
No change.
I manually moved the MAF sensor and the fuel pump turned on when I was in the ON position.
This leads me to believe that I am missing a signal leading to the ECU or a signal not reaching a destination or a bad ground.
Gonna do some line tracing to narrow it down.

Check your engine grounds. the main one to one of the starter bolts, connected to the chassis. You also have 2 other that connect to bolts on the intake plenum. Are you getting spark to the plugs. If not, check the mag pickup in the dizzy. The wires like to break, or short out.

Re: Borrow or receive donated Used 1981 Fiat Spider parts
if fuel is what you are missing, then this is real simple. the flap in the air flow meter turns on the fuel pump, you have determined that that is working. with that flap moved in the on position, and you hear the pump running, what is your fuel pressure? once you have determined you have 32-34lbs of pressure minimum. the only thing not getting fuel into the engine at this point is the injectors. they ground on the plenum, they receive a +5v signal from the ecu when its time to fire. the ecu gets its signal from the coil, the black covered wire on the coil, must be connected to the (-) side of the coil. having said all of this the rubber boot which goes from the plenum to the air flow meter needs to be vacuum tight, no rips or tears, it must also be installed when testing to see if it will run, this vacuum is what opens the flap in the air flow meter. hope this helps
this is also assuming that you have spark, the distributor determines when the coil fires, and therefore when the injectors fire

You might try listening with a cheap mechanic's stethoscope to hear whether the injectors click or not. If they click and you have no fuel, they are likely clogged. No click, likely not grounded correctly.

Did you shoot some starting fluid in there, and see if it fires ? I am not sure we have a clear idea what the symptoms are.
For instance, if you don't have spark, the ECU will not signal the injectors, as the distributor signals the ECU to fire the injectors...
