Info about steering wheel change

Post by Andi »

OK, I don't even own a 124 yet, I know :D
I guess it's normal to start thinking about small details I'd like to work on as soon as I buy the 124.

The first one is the steering wheel position. My legs are relatively long and my arms are relatively short, so I already know I have to find a way to position the steering wheel closer to my body. To give you an idea, on my Elise I had a 5'' spacer/snap-off boss.

Another thing I'd like to do is to restore the original steering wheel with new leather, but I want to drive the car in the meantime.

So... I was thinking about buying a black MOMO Prototipo like this one: http://www.aceautosports.com/gallery2/m ... alNumber=2

The questions are...
- since I need a spacer for the reasons mentioned above, I was thinking that I could buy a collapsible boss; I like the idea of a slightly improved safety in case of an accident (even if you're wearing a seatbelt, your face will likely hit the steering wheel); is it feasible on a 124?
- if it is, does these ones look "right" for the 124? Sorry if the description is in Italian... based on the image, does it look ok?

thanks a lot! :)

EDIT: I forgot an important detail... The cars I'm currently undecided between are an '80 MY and a '84 MY.

i think either would look ok, but i'd get the car first. some owners have swapped out steering wheels and have different adapters on there than what you might expect. as far as the original steering wheels are concerned, they are made of plastic and look like wood. they are very thin and the normal position is slightly tilted toward the windshield, so a little like driving a bus. you can bring the wheel down by inserting washers under two bolts that hold the steering column in place.

You might shop for a steering wheel that is heavily dished to pull the wheel rim further away from the dash. That spacer looks interesting but I'd have to see what it looks like in real life.
