Hello chaps,
I got a set of new Hasting iron rings for my 80.4mm pistons and I put them on last night and it didn't feel right. All of them were really loose. So I took some measurements of the rings and compared them to the old (chrome?) rings that I took off and found that both the radial width and thickness (axial width) were both below the Fiat specifications.
For example, Fiat says the top ring thickness (axial width) can be between 1.478 to 1.490mm, I measured the new ring to be 1.46 and the old to be 1.50. Granted my digital callipers are probably not the best in the world but it was noticeable loose on the groove. They also moved around a lot (backspacing?), so I measured the radial width and the new rings were smaller than the old ones as well. For example the 2nd ring, new is 3.00mm whilst the old one is 3.50mm.
What's going on here? Are these just a bad set?
