1979 S2000 smog and overheating

Post by BillFz1 »

Hi group,
I have a '79 spider running the adha carb to pass California smog. I have the engine running great but I am now overheating. All stock specs solid runner otherwise. I have bled the system 3 times for air. Running more than 5 minutes or so starts climbing to the red. Thermostat is working. (Lower hose hot) How many of these cars just run hot? I had it working but now it is always seeming the run hot.

overheating at idle or while driving? Is the fan working?

Mark, I am having trouble in both modes. The fan is working, but the temp isn't coming back down. It just hangs at about 230°. Previously when I bled the cooling system running down the road I would see about 195°F. Temp would go up when at idle, the fan comes on and the temp would go down until the fan shut off. The better I seem to get the carb I now can't get it to cool no matter what I do. I have even checked the water pump. (Which looks fine) I had it working and now I can seem to get things working again. The only thing I haven't removed is the radiator, and the coolant is 50/50. I am an experienced mechanic but this thing has me at the end of my rope.

do you have an infrared temp gun? If so, check the temps across the radiator. I'm betting the radiator is plugged up

I have access to one. I am going to check the possibilities of the radiator clogging. Some times these things are a "cascade" failure one thing after another but it sure is an expensive and slow process getting it back to spec.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
