Real Time Tranny Swap Help Needed

Post by srestum »

Sorry for the immediacy, but I'm in the midst of swapping out my transmission and the one that just came out has three different sets of wires coming off the top and passenger side of it. The one I'm swapping it with doesn't have these and doesn't have the option to put them on. Does anyone know what they are and what I can do to resolve this? I tried to post pictures but I don't have access I guess.

The first set of wires connects to a nut on the top of the tranny in front of the shifter tower. the replacement transmission doesn't have a hole or bolt to attach to.

The second set is on the passenger side above the fill plug and on the replacement that spot has an allen head bolt in the same place.

The third is a small screwed in wire between the two that looks like a ground?

The old transmission is a 76, the replacement is a 72.

Please Help. I'm in a holding pattern until I figure this out.

Thanks,

Scott

Not exactly sure from the descriptions.
But I have a '72 and can shed some light on that one.
The '72 should have three sets of wires.
Two (I believe) are for the fast idle setting.
This keeps the idle around 1500rpms between some gears to allow it to shift better.
The only one you need is on the rear-top-passenger side out the back.
That is the reverse/back up light switch.
It has two wires on it. (I think white to the tail lights and light blue/white to front of car.)

Hope this helps.
I can post a pic of mine later today if you need.

Thanks Dougieb,
It sounds like the three wires other than the reverse lights are for emissions.
Thanks csaba for that answer.
I don't see the rpm wires?
