Turn signal switch replacement w/other vehicles??

Post by Looie72 »

Does any one know where I can get a new turn signal switch for my 72 spider? Or if there is a Substitution part from a different vehicle?? any input would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think the early switches are available any more. If you update to the later switch you'll need to replace the steering wheel also. Otherwise the turn signal cancel won't work and the horn contacts may not line up either

You could always substitute it with one like this - Upper left switch is turn indicator switch from a '58 Austin Healey Sprite. . They hardly ever give any trouble.

Turn return

Does anyone know if one can repair a turn signal that is not self cancelling, before I tear everything down to look.
Thanks

Without taking a peek at the mechanism you can't tell why it's not self-cancelling. Anything can be repaired, the question becomes, is it worth it. I mean, would you have to fabricate a whole new mechanism? Not worth it. Did the catch pin break off? Fairly easy to fix.
It's pretty easy to take your steering wheel off to see the assy., horn button pops off, 1 nut on the shaft, and wiggle the wheel off.
It could be as simple as the collar the wheel screws onto is not in the correct position. With your wheels pointed straight, the hole that the catch pin drops into should be in the 6 o'clock position.
BTW, I'm going by how mine is, and it's an '82.

Baz,
remove the steering wheelincluding the hub. You will notice a small hole and a small plastic bolt - this is the cancelling device. Align properly and put it back on - it should work again.

Looie72, why do you think you need a turn signal switch?

mdrburchette;
Because neither of the turn signals are working, however the emergency flashers are working fine. Is there anything else I should check before I get another switch?

I don't believe I ever read the reason why. I'll look at the wiring diagram and see if I can make heads or tails from it. I may also have a lever assy from a 72. I'll look for that too.

If Denise is not able to dig up the '72 turn signal assy, I have one from a '76. Not sure if they are exactly the same. We'd need to compare notes to be sure.

Ok, so I figured out that my emergency flasher switch is not working as well as I thought; it continues to blink even when its in the off position and that is not allowing me to see whether the turn signal switch is working properly or not. Any suggestions??
