Weird clunking noise?

Post by paris »

I just replaced my upper ball joints the bottoms seemed fine, but I still have this wierd clunk when the car goes over a bump or when I drive out of a driveway side ways like when the weight of the car is shifted. Does anyone have any ideas where I should be looking for problems and yes all the bushings are in pretty bad shape but this noise seems pretty extreme???

Stop driving the car sideways, nothing good ever comes of it unless you want to become a professional "drifter".

1. Could be the shock has lost some rubber grommet at the top and is now hitting metal.
2. Check the front sway bar and make sure there is good rubber there.
3. What you think are good lower ball joints could really be a problem

whoops! driving sideways ?

are you certain the noise is from the front end? could the noise be from under the center of the car? whole lots of other issues could be causing your noise:
Guibo - or flex disk
center support bearing or its mounting bracket
u-joints

all cause clunking noises when they fail. very important to check and eliminate these items from your list of suspects, especially if you are not positive of the direction the noise is coming from.

Do you have the brake pad springs? Without the springs the pad backing plate will giggle against the caliper mount and make noise when going over a bump.

Also the front wheel bearings will make a similar noise if they are too loose.
