What Empi carb jets to smog my CA '78?

Post by rsweibel »

Hello! I''m so happy to be a new owner of a 1978 spider. Runs great... sort of. I failed CA smog as a gross polluter, so I need to figure out what jet combination will work in my new Empi 32/26 to reduce emissions. FYI -- new catalytic. all vacuum hoses new and properly connected along with non-functional EGR valve. Air injection working. So it should be a matter of jets, I'm told. Currently primary barrel main 137 / compensating 165 / idle 60. Secondary barrel main 140 / compensating 160 / idle 50. How do I figure out what jets I need? Can I buy a pack of various jets so I can try different sizes, first to pass smog and then to improve tuning? Where do I get them? My favorite local Fiat guy isn't really a smog expert. And the legendary local guy at Joe's Fiat in Redwood City must have more than enough customers -- he never even calls back. I can call some of the parts suppliers but I thought it'd be fun to say hello to the forum. Hello, forum. ~ Best, Robert

you can just try running smaller main jets and see what happens. Did you or shop try to adjust carb while it was on machine? Turning a few screws and adjusting timing along the way can mean pass or not. It will fail smog if the EGR is not working, if they test it like they should. Are you sure the air injection is getting to the cat? Have you verified the temp out of the cat is hotter than going in?

Hi. I would like to try smaller main jets as you suggest. In answer to your questions:
- Yes we've noodled around with settings and timing and as I understand it I must must smaller jets.
- I'm not sure the air injection is getting to the cat. I just was told the injection works.
I was in contact with one Fiat aftermarket guy who'd been very generous with advice, and I hoped to speak further with him, and order some parts, but he disappeared on me. Question for you: do you know if Empi and Weber jets are interchangeable? My guy has weber jets on hand but is unfamiliar with Empi.
