Can you put too much fluid in a transmission?

Post by Jimb »

I bought two bottles of GL-1 from Vicks (who incidentally were the only vendor I could find who carried it) and both will fit in the transmission, although I did have the front of the car elevated above the rear.
The specs call for 1 3/4 quarts and I believe each container is a quart, although they are not marked.

I don't believe that is possible :? I filled mine until it trickled out the fill hole. This might help

if it is done, it will be a problem, too much fluid, could cause the fluid to leak from the breather and the seals

The next time you need GL1 give NAPA auto parts a try. I don't want to take any business away from anyone. However, you can buy it in one gallon jugs for less than your two quarts.

I did go to NAPA...in fact I tried every avenue you could imagine in Canada. Nobody has it.

i had to try 4 napa stores before i finally found one that had it in stock (about 40 mins away from home). the other stores were hesitant to order it because they have to order 4 gallons at a time and adide fromt he one glalon i needed, said they wouldn't be able to sell the others.

Thanks Jay,
I've read lots about the various GL Grades and I figured as long as I was going to all the work of pulling the engine and trans and then having the trans professionally rebuilt I wanted to go with strictly GL-1...although I know GL-4 has been used as a substitute.
While I know it was expensive thru Vicks...especially when they said they had to have a minimum $50 order before they'd ship it to me, (and I must admit they could have stated that a bit more eloquently than the way they did), I was already so frustrated at trying to find it elsewhere.

Yes, that one was a possibility if I absolutely couldn't get the GL-1.
But now I'm glad I went the distance and got my first choice even though it took a long time to get.

The lower plug on the passenger side of the transmission is the fill plug. I read here of more than one person over filling from the top plug.

I know I have the right plug. In fact once I leveled the car and pulled the filler plug back out I recovered a little less that 1/2 of a quart before it stopped pouring out, so that would leave 1 3/4 quarts to fill it to the fill hole which is just what the specs call for. :)

Cheers,
Jim
