rear axle question

Post by spiderbob79 »

I have a 79 spider that I'm replacing the rear axle seals. My problem is I have a shop manual and 3 other manuals
and none of them are very clear about where the O-ring goes. They show a cross section of the earlier spiders
that have a seat for the O-ring on the inside of the axle housing toward the inboard side of the bearing and a
snap ring on the out side of the bearing. It says that 78 and later are different. They don't have the snap ring, they have
a separate caliper mounting bracket that bolts to the housing. There isn't a cross section view of the later ones but
there's a picture of the axle shaft and it looks like it might go between the bearing and the caliper mounting bracket.
Does anyone Know for sure if that's where it goes? I would really appreciate any help with this.

Thanks !

There is a bevel on the OD of the axle 'hole' where the bearing goes in, that's where it goes.
Basically put it around the bearing, and as you push it in the o-ring will end up in the right place, as long as you keep pressure on the retaining plate.
