What type of engine

Post by cibon1 »

I'm in the process of restoring a 1969 spider. The engine block was cracked and was stamped with a C. Does this mean that it was from a coup? And weren't the spider and coup engines identical anyway? Thanks

Here are the numbers that are on the engine block that came out of the car. On the left side are cast # 124AC FIAT

On the right side of the engine block are several cast numbers - 4180202 just under the last freeze plug. Just over the last freeze plug is a cast "A"
Under third freeze plug from front of engine are cast numbers 9E29

not looking for cast in numbers, these are stamped above the oil filter housing

The engine identification number is stamped into the engine block near the oil filter. It is sometimes covered in grime. Carburetor cleaner or degreaser and a brush will allow you to read it. On the Spider 2000 engine (1979-1985) it is located just to the right of the oil filter. On all Spiders manufactured prior to 1979 it is located above the oil filter. It is important to note that the last few numbers may not match up - this usually indicates an engine swap at some point in your car’s history. If the first digits (i.e. 132A1 is always a 1756) are correct then you have the original displacement engine in your vehicle. If the last few digits (i.e. 031.5) are correct then you have the original displacement and model year type.

my engine is 132A1.031.6

which looks to be a 1756 engine.. though most places i checked did not have a .6 listed, only a .5

so the PO did not know what engine he had. or he just misspoke and said it was a 1600.

So, how do I identify the engine if it is not stamped? I recently bought a 78 that the PO said had the engine replaced before he got it and he "thought" it was a 2 liter. Car is carbed with an aftermarket dual weber setup and header so not a lot of clues there. The land above the oil filter housing is blank, no stamping. How else do I ID the engine?

The oil pan is the smooth rear two step version which I think means 79 or newer? Not the 78 style with the three grooves in the rear section. What else can I look for?

Never mind, re-read above and found stamping on land to the right of oil filter housing. 132 C2 040 0606840 so looks like a 1979 2 liter!
