Engine mounts for 2,0 replacing 1.8

Post by BCTim »

I just picked up a 2.0 engine to replace a 1.8 in my 76 Spider (thanks Chris aka narfire). Do I need to get thicker engine mounts to provide proper clearance of the oil pan over the cross member? Everything but the head and block are from the car, are there any other items that might be a problem during the switch?
Thanks in advance.

the distributor will be very close the underside of the hood. What exhaust manifold and head pipe are you going to use?

Exhaust manifold is the 4-1 that was on the car. The head pipe is single. I did pick up a 4-2-1 from Chris but that change will come if the exhaust system dies sometime down the road. We did talk about how the 2 pipe would fit and possible need for extension. The block is just a bit taller so that will push the distributor up, but do I have any choice? I have the small bump hood, so hope I have enough clearance.

don't know if it is worth mentioning but the 2L cross member is actually a little lower than the rest to accommodate the extra height in the block. Another option is to have your dizzy point away or down from the bonnet/hood

II put 2L motors in all my spiders (and a coupe). This includes cars with 1800 and 1608 motors. I never changed the crossmember and never changed the motor mounts (unless needing replacement) and never had a problem. If using the 4-2-1 exhaust you need to use the later style downpipe as they provide the necessary frame clearance. Earlier style downpipes (1438 motor?) will be too short. To get the most from your spider with either an 1800 or 2L you need a 4-2-1 exhaust.
