'74 Spider: 4-2-1 Exhuast Manifold?

Post by phaetn »

I have a deposit down on a '74 Spider 1800, VIN: 124CS10076424

I won't pick it up until March/April when the salt is off the roads and I can go for one test drive before handing over the balance of $$ and I don't have access to look at it again until then. The one time I could look at it I was concentrating on other things in the engine (oil leak) and the space was too tight to get a really good look.

From what I can tell, and I have just reviewed Brad's pdf tuning guide, this should come with a 4-2-1 header as stock, is that right? Or am I way off? I don't know if they were on all '74s, and I know the only way to tell for sure is to get ocular proof.

I'm making a "to buy" list and budget. I know the 4-2-1 on the 1800 intake is supposed to be a good bang for the buck. The car already has an Empi 32/36 DFEV carb and Mark's (Allison Automotive's) distributorless ignition. I'm just wondering if I should budget for a different header than stock if it's not already a 4-2-1.

Thanks and cheers,
phaetn

It should have the 4-2-1 exhaust manifold but these cars have been through so many owners and sometimes bizarre modifications that who knows. Can't you get the seller to verify the manifold for you?

Well, it's stored off-site and I didn't want to bother him.

We're three weeks closer to it being in my hands now, though, so I'll figure it out soon enough. :)

Big thaw and rain here today. Good news for getting Spiders on the road. Bad news for $$$: because of ice damming water penetrated the brick of my 19thC house where it joins the back roof and water started leaking from the dining room ceiling. Agh!

As I paid a roofer to chop off the ice and stem the flow of melt, I just keep reminding myself this is just one step closer to Spider-weather. :)

He he he. I just checked your occupation. :)

Not sure if it's the pointing in the bricks or the way the flashing was re-attached when the roof was redone in Sept. 2012 or that that's not a good diverter or what. Not pleasant, any way you look at it: water was pouring through the window frame (entering much higher than the window itself) and then made its way along the ceiling. Ugh. That's on top of two frozen pipes this year.

I'd rather work on a Spider than the house. :) These $$ are just taking away from Fiat upgrades. :)

all that ice built up . you need to fix that
get a membrane that goes under the shingles, you will have to tear off prolly 4 ft of shingles from the edge up
