Soccer moms drive like idiots

Post by spidernut »

My son is sitting at a red light, second car in the line of cars making a right turn. A guy pulls up behind him (driving a bit too fast) and bumps into my son's bumper. They get out to assess any damage and there is none worth reporting.

A soccer mom in her soccer-mom black Chevrolet SUV who was behind the guy who hit my son entered the picture - She pulled up and started cursing loudly out the window at my son using the F word (with her children in the car of course). Neither my son nor the guy who hit him knows why. Oh, merry Christmas to her too, by the way.

So, the wife and I were headed out to lunch yesterday and all the soccer moms seem to be out and about in their soccer mom SUVs. We see the same type of aggressive driving only from them. Everyone else seemed to be patient and driving courteously despite the very crowded roadways.

Then, we experience the soccer moms driving their SUVs and talking on their cell phones, then soccer moms tailgating and driving excessively fast in their soccer mom SUVs, then the soccer moms driving their SUVs excessively slow due to talking on the cell phones, the we see a soccer mom vehicle that ran off the road (way off the road and almost rolled), etc.

SUVs are the new soccer mom vehicle of choice and are dangerous weapons in the hands of the soccer moms in the area in which I live. If I had the ability, I would outlaw both soccer moms and SUVs.

Great post John.
Wife was a by-law officer in town and witnessed much the same when soccer moms were dropping off their kids at school and stopping in no stopping/parking zones.
She's retired now and very happy.

You are right, I have noticed them weaving thru traffic and flying by me on the freeway with a car full of kids with their heads bobbing around. Seems like the opposite of what a responsible parent would be doing. Common sense to be getting less and less common these days. :(

spidernut,
You want to read something funny? -- check this out: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... soccer+mom
Read more than just the first few definitions -- it gets pretty good as you read on through the site.

By the way, I drive a big, honking SUV when I am not driving my Spider -- but I like to think that I drive it responsibly and I didn't buy it for the same reasons soccer moms buy theirs (or for the same reasons their rich husbands bought it for them).

I pay extra attention and look for my escape route when I'm driving my Spider and a big SUV is coming up behind me at a stop light. I'm going to get a dump truck as my second car. They're much safer than an SUV in an accident, especially if they are filled with a load of gravel.

In defense of the soccer mom I am married to, you only notice the soccer moms that are driving like maniacs in giant vehicles. There is at least one out there (and I'm guessing there are actually a lot out there) that drive like perfectly reasonable people in perfectly reasonable cars.

I'm guessing there are also plenty of good-driver moms out there that have closely held stereotypes about middle-aged men in souped up roadsters, trying to drive like they were 18. Not that I would put myself in that category...ok, sometimes....

I drive too many miles per year and I have had one near incident with a man driving an SUV. Every other near accident, nearly ever time I'm being tailgated, every time I see someone weaving on the road and failing to drive at a constant speed, it is a soccer mom type in an SUV. Usually a Chevy Tahoe (or clone model) or Traverse.

Here there is a high percentage of seniors. Most are fine if you are patient but a fellow in the fire hall years ago said "if you are going to be in an accident in Penticton, the other driver is likely an older man wearing a hat".... guess what so true to date with all the close calls I've had.

So does this mean if i'm an old gay guy wearing a hat and driving an SUV that's been lowered with wide low profile tires that I am the ultimate road menace.

Hmmm, perhaps in Penticton, :P but I think some of the little older ladies that I think have difficulty seeing over the dash can be an issue here as well.

I pulled into the shoulder and let one pass me the other day because all I could see in the mirror was a big old Cadillac emblem as she rode my bumper all the while talking on her phone (not hands free of course). I was really hoping for a cop to see her hauling ass in a 45mph zone.

You should see the parking lot at my daughters high school at afternoon pick up after sports. Going the wrong way, speeding, cutting off, honking, yelling. It's insane.

Just because you're driving a deuce and a half with a leather interior doesn't give you license to drive like a nut job.

have you ever peeked inside one of those new SUV's? its nicer than most peoples living rooms. the car makers go out of their way to appoint them with every conceivable gadget short of a toaster oven. I even saw one with a factory glove box cooler. the vehicles come equipped with way too many distractions to start with! then add a multitasking soccer mom/dad/senior with a cell phone in one hand taking "selfies" to send to the tablet in their other hand all while trying to work the remote control for the ceiling mounted DVD player for the "little social zombies" in the back seat! i think i'm going to leave the Spider safe and sound in the garage for a little while and go play Mario Kart!

I drove from Lincoln, CA, to Newark, CA, (2 1/2 hours each way) today. Three women driving SUVs and one male driving an SUV almost ran into me on my trip. No other vehicles presented a problem other than a highly aggressive male in his ego-truck doing about 85 in a 65.
