Noisy clutch when depressed? 81 Spider

Post by mrspahr »

When I push down on the clutch pedal, I hear a sort of rubbing sound....not loud, but noticeable.
Makes a sheeeaaaaaa sound. When I release the clutch after shifting, noise stops.
Can someone tell me if this is normal, or do I have a problem waiting to happen?
Car is a 81 Spider FI.
Thank You, Marty

most likely noise from your throwout bearing. If you have a bad gearshift boot, it can allow tranny and clutch sounds to be audible. The bearing does get louder with age. Normally a pretty slow transition from good to bad.

My new bearing started that transition after less than a thousand miles

Mine is the opposite. Makes some bearing noise when the pedal is up and goes away when I depress the pedal. Been doing that for a couple of years. I think I'm going to take it to Mark soon because I also have a leaky front transmission seal. My money says he does the clutch, seal, bearing in 1 1/2 hrs flat.... F1 style.

That's more likely the gearbox input shaft bearing than the clutch throwout bearing.

Yes, as Mick said, or the sleeve where the input shaft protrudes out of the gearbox...mine was slightly dented and caused a rock tumbler sound when pedal was up.
