Gear reduction starter = significant upgrade
My starter gave up the ghost and I opted for Autoricambi's gear reduction starter. Man, what a difference! It's quite a bit lighter and probably spins at 2x the old one. When yours goes, I highly recommend this upgrade. You will not be disappointed.

Jody,
Thank you for the plug.... but to be fair, Mark also sells these starters.
Im a but of a prude when it comes to OEM, but I agree, this is probably one of the best improvements you can make to your Spider.

These are really great, though the one I got hasn't quite worked out yet. Hopefully with the fresh ring gear it will. A few thoughts:
1) Clearly spins up much faster
2) Ridiculously easy to install, imo. As long as you have a 13mm universal and 1-2 feet of extensions, getting it off takes 1-2 hours first time, with 20 minutes of that being finding the top starter bolt and cursing and spitting. (Maybe I've been spending too much time dealing with transmission/engine stuff if I think it's easy to install) I would connect the wires before bolting it in, though, since the starter can be hard to get to depending on your intake manifold setup.
3) Lighter, better made
