rear brake problem

Post by azruss »

Changing out pad and rotors. put the rear axle on jack stands, released the tension on the e-brake. loosened the bleeder, turned the adjust screw piston all the way in. I can only get it about an 1/8" from being flush with the caliper casting. I that level there isnt enough room for the rotor to fit between the pads. Both sides are the same. I took a spare and removed the piston by unscrewing it. I could only screw it down the same as the 2 on the car. It appears that the only way to get it lower is to remove the e-brake wedge. then if you managed to get it back in, your pads would be locked on the rotor. So what am i doing wrong.

these pads are half the thickness of the front pads. There are no backers on this pad. just the friction material with the metal plate with the knob. Also, when i disassemble the piston, i see nothing that would require an orientation.

I just went out to the shop and after 20 minutes, I need to do a data base to keep track of parts, I found rear calipers that I rebuilt last year and put on the shelf. The pistons do stick out about an 1/8 of an inch. I put in new pads and put them on a new rotor and they fit with room to spare. Not a lot, but no trouble getting them on.

I ended up opening the bleeder and pushing in hard while screwing in the piston. This bought me about .020" of clearance. I used a 1 x 1/8" flat file and a crescent as a screwdriver. it worked great.

yes you need to orient them, the piston has a slot in it to turn it in, one one side of the slot is a machined in line, that line goes on the top side of the grove that you turn the piston in with, both being horizontal. this allows air to be blead out of the piston
