off idle stumble?

I rebuilt the carb on my 1979 S2000 spider and I now have a nasty off-idle stumble. Anyone here familiar with the 28-32 adha? Is there a common mistake folks make when rebuilding them? The car starts fine but even after warming up gives a stutter when pulling from a stop or shifting. The idle mixture screw seems VERY effective. In a bit too far and it will almost die but the range when running ok is less than 1/4 turn. Can anybody here help?
