SON'S 1980 SPIDER PROBLEM

Post by MARCELLO »

Hi Spiderfans,
After driving my 1974 spider while in high school, my son, now 47, finally bought his own 1980. It's a beauty cosmetically, but he's having some problems mechanically, which he knew about prior to purchase. Initially it would not start. He managed to get it starting by replacing a sensor for (I think) the fuel injectors. However, it now stalls when he revs. He thinks this may be a timing advance issue. Can any one offer some educated guesses? Thanks in advance :)

check the rubber boot between the air flow meter and the upper intake, make sure there are no vaccuum leaks, also check the door in the air flow meter and make sure it moves freely and is not stuck

Thanks Beek,
I will pass on your response.
Son just e-mailed me that he ordered a new airflow sensor that will be delivered tomorrow.
Will post his progress.

Tis a slippery slope to go down, replacing parts as they come to mind. TONS of good info on testing items available here.

timing advance or lack of, won't cause stalling although it can create some driveability issues

Thanks to everyone who replied!
Son replaced the air flow monitor and she runs sweet!
He is on to the tranny and rear end now....they are making noise.
