Check valves with head off

I have the cylinder head off the car. Someone mentioned to check the valves I could pour varsol or keresene into the upside down head and see how quickly it seeps out. This would generally tell me how well the valves are seated before I put the head back on the engine. I've already checked the valve/tappet shims are they are within spec. Any other tests I could do before I put the head back on?
