shimmy diagnosis

Post by georgeramos »

I'm experiencing a shimmy. Most noticeable at low speeds. Feels like its in the rear. Can anyone rcommend an order of things to check/rule out?

Thanks

tire pressures is first to rule out.... all the same right? any different wear pattern on the tires?
Tire balance good, any weights fall off?
All lug nuts tight?
Jack rear up and push / pull tire to see if there is play.., (bearings? )
Trailing arm bushings?
Trailing arm bolts tight?
Forward plate on the long trailing arm...all nuts tight?
Jack front up and check the push / pull on the tires/wheels. any play... why bearings or ball joint pooched, perhaps the tie rod ends.

Hit a curb lately...alignment?
Lower A arm still tight to cross member...all alignment shims in place?

Some things I have checked over the years and on occasion have needed attention...

oh yea, any play in the steering wheel?, adjust nut on the top of the steering box..

Thank you Chris! I started the list myself then hobbled to a local friendly shop to get it on a l. ift. They were helping me inspect the rear suspension but I mentioned it felt tire related to me. We spun them by hand ant lo&behold one of the belts had separated. We are very lucky. We did a 250 mile drive the weekend before the 4th. Its gettting all new rubber now...
