1.8 rebuild

Post by cp2295 »

Hi all,

I am looking to rebuild the 1.8 that's in my '78 spider.
Can someone give me a ballpark on how much that should cost?

Thanks!

How much of the work will you be doing yourself?

Hi,

To start, the motor has a blown rear main seal, the clutch is fried, and the motor has 80,000 miles on it.

I have taken the motor/tranny out and need to service the head, gaskets, piston rings, things of that nature.

Any job that I can do I will do, as I am on a serious budget at the moment.

Any other specifics needed for better description, please let me know.

Does this help narrow down a price range better?

Thanks!

If you are not replacing the pistons and will do the work yourself then all you need is a gasket set, bearings, thrust washers, and rings. However, if everything is apart you should strongly consider replacing the clutch, water pump, belts, motor mounts, freeze plugs, coolant and heater hoses. All these parts should be under $600
Oh, and check the oil pump and replace if out of spec.
