Oil in exhaust - what causes it?

I recently noticed some oil splatter on the garage floor under the tail pipe. I have noticed a little smoke but not much. What would cause oil to get into the exhaust system?

Obviously, oil gets in the exhaust from rings and vavle seals. That splatter is likely more water mixed with soot than anything else. Exhaust systems end up with a lot of water in em and that is a normal part of combustion.
