cruise control

Post by 81SPIDERMATT »

81 spider ... done some searching and seem to be a lot about dual throttle cables on earlier models "poor mans cruise control" ...not wanting something like that.... googled aftermarket cruise controls and jargon reads like a medical book to me.... hoping someone can recommend a specific unit with good directions that would work on my car..... thanks for help and willingness to share.... Only installed one aftermarket back in the 80's that you glued magnets to the driveshaft and bolted up a sensor to the body to ready the rotations. Worked ok. If you need cruise control it just means your driving on the wrong roads :D

I've got it on my '76. It's lethal... do not even think of using it as Cruise Control! The real thing means you touch the accelerator or the brake and it turns off... this doesn't!

As a handy throttle setting point for warming the engine though - it's excellent...

Spidermatt, I installed an Audiovox universal cruise control. SLO, yes it requires a magnet to be attached to the driveshaft. The unit works well, and makes long highway drives bearable. A gutted ashtray makes a good place for the controller, if you're trying to keep a stock look. (click to play)

There is nothing Balto Bernie cannot make. Don't ask about the ejector seat and rocket pods. The McGuyver of the DCFIAT club.

I've put in dozens of em over the years. Most of the modern ones do not use magnets, but use the coil(-) rpm signal. They are fairly simple to install, just follow directions.

Funny. Car is still in the paint shop. Carlisle will hopefully be its coming out party....was also the first event for me after I bought the car last spring.

On cruise control, agree the primitive lock-down-the-gas mechanism in my '71 has to be used judiciously. It was a blessing when I took the car on a long interstate drive with no traffic - would never use like a modern cruise control.

baltobernie, can you post a few photos showing how you installed the cruise control servo, etc., in the engine compartment?

Thanks

I get the long flat road and making long highway drives more bearable as a reason cruse control is a desirable option. For me, I like the idea of one less modern convienance item on a classic roadster. One of the benefits of not having cruise control is the need for the driver to control and vary the RPM's. IMHO the engine performs better when you vary the RPMs on a long drive. No airbags, anti lock brakes, tire pressure sensors, micro chip key, reverse bumper sensors, self parking programming, cruse control, electric windows....

Driving the Spider brings me back to old time driving where the driver is in complete control. It's one of the things i love about these cars.

I have a few photos. I installed the Audio Vox speed control actuator in place of the windshield washer bottle. If I were to do it again I would try and install it behind the headlight bucked behind the fender liner and have he wires and control cable pass through the fender well. I made a custom center console and mounter the controller in place of the ash tray.

Hope this helps. The AudioVox scs100 uses both magnets on the drive shaft and the coil pick up. I installed the magnets on the short drive shaft section between the transmission and the drive shaft bearing. Once I figured out the dip switch settings I am amazed at the cruise controls performance. I installed it about 6 years ago and it has over 20,000 trouble free miles on it.
